Legend says that Hampstead received its name in the late 1780s from George Washington. During one of Washington's journeys he planned to spend the night in the area and feast on the abundant mullet caught in Topsail Sound. However, upon arrival, the mullet had not yet begun to run so he had to dine on ham instead. From that day on the area was known as "Hampstead" (pronounced "ham 'stead").

Pender County was founded in 1875 and named for William Dorsey Pender, a Confederate general.

Nearby Topsail was named for pirates who hid in island coves awaiting sightings of merchant ship topsails and was also once the haunt of such famed marauders as Blackbeard, Stede Bonnet and Captain Kidd.

Hampstead has one of the nation's only Mormon cemeteries as well as a historical marker commemorating Topsail Battery, where Confederate troops stopped a Union advance that never came. Moore's Creek Battlefield is where patriot forces turned back a Tory army in a decisive Revolutionary War battle.
